• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Walter Eugene Lane -- The Great Classic Tale Of Cosmic Horror. : I've looked over a lot of the versions of this book that are out there. Many of them are not well formatted, and some are in pretty bad shape. This edition is in wonderful shape, expertly formatted. It even has the footnotes hyperlinked so you can just click on them to see a text box that gives you the notation. That's a very nice touch; the reader need not look at the back of the book for them. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Camp -- A Really Bad Place, Psychic Detectives, and Monster Pigs : William Hope Hodgson's _The House on the Borderland and Other Mysterious Places_ (2004) is Volume 2 of Night Shade Books noble effort to assemble The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson in five volumes. I would argue that this volume is the most _essential_ volume in the series. It balances Hodgson's most ambitious novel (_The House on the Borderland_) with some of his most entertaining tales (the Carnacki the Ghost-Finder stories). And there are eleven non-series tales of mystery and suspense in addition. Yes, the begining reader would do well to start with this volume of Hodgson. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shmuelman -- An rxcellent firstof its genre : Originally published around 1907, the book was an inspiration to HP Lovecraft and stands as early example of its genre, though in some respects (its dark and fantastic character) reminds me of Poe. I am about halfway through (I read it 40 years ago but appreciate it much more now) and have found none of the annoying errors that sometimes appear in books that have been converted to the digital format. My only criticism is Hodgson is a little enamored with commas. Thanks to Amazon for offering this for no cost. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2020 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from jinha -- Cosmic : Interesting and definitely horrific in certain parts. I love this type of prose, it can make simple events or actions all the more creepier. The cellar in particular was quite eerie, as is the house itself. Unfortunately, there's a lot of filler in between where it's basically someone going through psychedelics and there's only so much you can do to make the passage of time, sunsets and lights interesting until it gets repetitive and a downright chore to read. Skimming through a few chapters near the middle won't ruin much of the book for you. The cosmic horror part still has its merits and one can see where it inspired Lovecraft. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from S. J. Fletcher -- Cosmic : The blurb to this novella was appealing, appearing to contain all of the elements that I look for in this type of narrative. The beginning and end which features two gentlemen camping in some unknown corner of Ireland, held more interest for me than the rest of the book. The main body of the book is taken up with their reading of an old manuscript which they find in a very strange and desolate area. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2020 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from JK -- A darkly disturbing, fantastical, mystifying journey through time. : Classic story which begins with the discovery of the ruins of a strange, deserted house somewhere on the Irish borders. Inside the house lies an old journal the contents of which act as a catalyst for what is to come. The journal belonged to a previous resident of the house and contains a story which could either chart the complete descent into madness or the story of haunting, hidden realms and time travel in which the Earth crashes towards it's final days only for the plot to turn around and take off in a different direction. The question of sanity v insanity is beautifully worked and intriguing as are the demonic creatures which enter in and out of the house as it topples above an abyss which seeks to swallow the building and entomb the residents in its cavernous depths. Chapter after chapter details endless time travel through surreal territories ranging from the surface of the planet to the outer edges of the universe. 'The House on the Borderland' is completely baffling. There's no real way to work it out or make any sense of it because the story is so fantastical and surreal but; I enjoyed the read and found some of the horror elements particularly dark and disturbing. I also enjoyed the concept of fantasy v reality which became quite unsettling. Well worth a read. Recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2016 )
